The GLB-Class is one of Mercedes-Benz’s latest models, combining the GLA’s compact dimensions and car-like drivetrain with the much more expensive GLS’ three-row seating configuration.
GLA and GLB have the same 5.1-inch wheelbase and are longer and taller, allowing seating capacity for seven people. The design is more angled than the GLA, thanks to upright D-pillars to improve third-row headroom.

Safety Features
IIHS does not publish safety ratings for GLB classes, but in NHTSA’s 5-star system, the 2022 GLB FWD scored 4 stars overall, and the 2022 GLB AWD scored 5 stars. The GLB FWD also received a 4-star passenger side rating and rollover strength rating.
Standard active safety technology includes blind spot monitoring and automatic rain sensor wipers. Features such as adaptive cruise control, lane centering, and automatic emergency braking are also available.
Space for Cargo and Legroom
The GLB rides the same platform as the GLA class, but for a more traditional upright SUV shape, Mercedes has tucked the small available third row into the rear of the GLB, making it unique in the segment.

Technology
All 2022 GLB SUVs come standard with LED headlights and a power liftgate. The standard price for the interior includes 8-way power front seats with 3-position memory, a 7.0-inch digital cluster and 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto compatibility.
Step up to the AMG GLB35, and a 10.3-inch instrument cluster and infotainment screen come standard. There’s also a steering wheel, heads-up display, navigation, and 64-color ambient lighting (all of these features are also available on the GLB250).
Power Train
The powertrain is the same as the GLA, equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo 4 with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. At 302 horsepower, he also has the GLA35 and offers pleasing dynamics without sacrificing comfort. Since its introduction, Mercedes has added standard blind spot monitoring.
Fuel Economy
All 2022 GLB SUVs are ready with a 2.0-liter turbocharged in-line 4-cylinder engine. The GLB250 FWD and 4Matic AWD use a 221-horsepower unit and an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The AMG GLB35 turbocharged 4-cylinder is boosted to 302 horsepower and is mated to an 8-speed automatic. AMG models come standard with AWD.
The 2022 GLB250 FWD has the highest rating of the model line at EPA estimated 24/32 mpg city/highway. That’s a slight improvement over the 22/29 mpg 2.0-liter Turbo 4 in the 2022 Lincoln Corsair FWD and just short of the 23/32 mpg in the 2022 Volvo XC40 T4 FWD.
Going with AWD, the GLB250 is good for 22/30 mpg. Those numbers drop to 20/27 mpg on the GLB35 AWD model.
Trim
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class is available in three trim levels: GLB250, GLB250 4Matic AWD, and AMG GLB35. The price jump to the AMG GLB35 is well above the standard model’s low price tag, so we think the GLB250 4Matic is the best fit. Aside from dynamic improvements (more power, AMG performance gearbox, AWD system), the only things AMG models do better than non-AMG models are larger screens, AMG steering wheels, and LED taillights.
If you’re looking for a more powerful SUV, consider the GLA35 or GLC43. Otherwise, if you don’t mind the third row of seats available, the GLA250 might be a better choice.
Which One We Would Recommend
Don’t let the subcompact SUV classification fool you. The GLB250 and the AMG GLB35 feel spacious in the first and second row, but the third row is mainly for small children. The comfortable front seats and surroundings are mostly copied from those found in the GLA. The cabin let us down with the intrusive wind, tire noise at highway speeds, and a frustrating infotainment system interface, but otherwise, it was a comfortable place to be.
Our opinion of GLB worsened the more time we spent in rugged roads. After testing the GLB250 we found that the suspension didn’t absorb minor vibrations, and the transmission, which made the most of its 221 horsepower, shifted frequently.
